Planning a destination wedding in Fiji is a pretty special thing. There’s the warm tropical weather, the ocean, the palms, the flowers, and that feeling that everything moves just a little slower here.

But planning a wedding somewhere completely different from home can also come with a few things you might not think about until you arrive. After photographing weddings across Fiji, I’ve picked up a few things that can make your wedding day feel easier, more relaxed, and a whole lot more enjoyable.

Here are some of my favorite Fiji wedding tips for brides planning their island celebration.

1. Embrace the Fiji pace

This is one of my biggest things!

One of the best things about getting married in Fiji is that you don’t have to rush.

Give yourself plenty of time on your wedding day and avoid packing your timeline too tightly. Hair and makeup can take a little longer than expected, getting between locations may take time, and you’ll want space to actually enjoy the people around you.

Of course, it’s easy to get frustrated on your wedding day, especially when things do need to follow a schedule. But try to let the island time become part of the day with you. Things will happen; they just may not happen exactly when you want them to.

And that can be a beautiful thing.

Sometimes those unexpected delays or changes pull you out of your carefully planned timeline and bring you back into the moment. Fiji has a way of making you slow down and be present in what’s actually happening around you.

Those slower moments often end up being some of my favorite photographs.

2. Don't let golden-hour lighting rule your day

If beautiful wedding photography is important to you, it’s natural to dream about those soft, glowy sunset photographs. But try not to let the lighting dictate your entire wedding day.

A good photographer can work with all kinds of light, from bright midday sun to shaded spots, covered spaces, and everything in between. Fiji’s tropical light can be beautiful throughout the day, and there’s no need to wait until golden hour for meaningful portraits.

Instead, let moments sneak in naturally as the day unfolds. A quiet walk after getting ready, a few minutes together after the ceremony, or a quick portrait while your guests enjoy a drink can all create beautiful photographs.

Golden hour is lovely, but it isn’t the only time worth photographing. The most important thing is to enjoy your day, stay present, and trust your photographer to make the most of the light wherever you are.

3. Don't be afraid of a little rain

This one is especially important for a Fiji destination wedding.

The weather here can change quickly, and tropical showers are simply part of island life. Try not to let a little rain completely derail your plans.

Some of the most beautiful wedding photographs can happen just after a rain shower — when the air feels fresh, the colours are rich, the clouds create beautiful dramatic light, and you might even be lucky enough to catch a rainbow.

Have a backup plan, but don't feel like rain automatically means your day is ruined.

Sometimes you have to go with it.

4. Choose a location that feels like you

Fiji has so many different places to get married, from luxury resorts and private islands to intimate beachfront celebrations.

Think about what you actually want your wedding to feel like.

Do you want something barefoot and relaxed? Romantic and intimate? Elegant and elevated? A big celebration with everyone you love?

Your location will naturally influence the feeling of your photographs, so choose somewhere that feels like an extension of the two of you rather than simply choosing the prettiest venue on a list.

5. Give yourselves time alone

This is one of my biggest wedding-day recommendations.

Your wedding day can become a bit of a whirlwind. There are people to greet, photographs to take, meals to eat, speeches, champagne, and a hundred little things happening around you.

Build in a few minutes where it’s just the two of you.

It could be a private moment after your ceremony, a short walk along the beach, or simply sitting together with a drink before joining everyone again.

Not only is it a beautiful way to slow down and actually take in the day, but these moments can also make some of the most meaningful photographs.

6. Keep your details personal

You don't need to go overboard with wedding details just because you're having a destination wedding.

The little things that have meaning to you are what matter.

Your grandmother's earrings. A handwritten letter. A perfume you've worn for years. A pair of shoes you love. Flowers that remind you of home. Something you've brought from your life together.

These details help tell the story of your wedding day and give your photographer little pieces of your personality to photograph.

7. Let your photographer guide you

You don't need to know how to pose.

Really.

My favorite wedding photographs aren't always the perfectly posed ones. They're the moments in between,  the way you naturally reach for each other, laugh together, look at one another, or walk hand in hand down the beach.

A good Fiji wedding photographer should give you enough direction to feel comfortable while letting the island glow shine through you, without making the whole experience feel stiff or overly posed.

Think less “What am I supposed to do?” and more “Let's just enjoy this.”

8. Make time for the people you brought with you

One of the beautiful things about a destination wedding is that the people who make the trip to Fiji are usually the people who matter most.

Make sure you actually spend time with them.

Have a drink together. Get in the ocean. Take a few family photographs. Have dinner together. Let them be part of the experience rather than simply guests at the wedding.

Your wedding gallery should include more than just photographs of the two of you. Years from now, you'll want to remember the people who were there too.

9. Don't let the weather dictate the whole day

It's easy to get caught up in wanting perfect weather for your Fiji wedding.

But perfect doesn't always mean blue skies.

Clouds can create beautiful soft light. Wind can make a veil or dress move beautifully. Rain can create atmosphere. And a cloudy sunset can sometimes be even more dramatic than a clear one.

Come prepared for the tropical weather, but don't let it stop you from enjoying your day.

10. Choose vendors who understand Fiji

If you're planning your wedding from overseas, having vendors who know Fiji can make the whole experience much easier.

Your photographer, planner, hair and makeup artist, florist, and other vendors will understand things that aren't always obvious when you're planning from another country,  from travel times and resort rules to weather, lighting, locations, and how quickly things can change on an island.

And when everyone knows the environment they're working in, you can relax a little more and enjoy being here.

11. Don't forget to actually enjoy Fiji

This might be the most important tip of all.

You've travelled all this way for a reason.

There are also plenty of activities to enjoy with your groom or your wedding party. Consider planning a fun day before or after the wedding at places like Cloud 9 or Malamala Beach Club, where you can swim, snorkel, enjoy a long lunch by the ocean, sip cocktails, and make the most of your time in Fiji together.

Your wedding is the reason you're coming to Fiji, but it doesn't have to be the only thing you experience here.

Consider bringing your photographer along to capture the full story of your wedding experience, not just the day itself. It’s so much fun to have photographs of this experience with your loved ones and create a full wedding story to look back on forever.

Your Fiji wedding should feel like you

At the end of the day, there really isn't one right way to have a Fiji wedding.

Whether you're planning a huge celebration at a resort, an intimate elopement on the beach, or something somewhere in between, the best weddings are the ones that leave a little room for the real stuff, the laughter, the happy tears, the people you love, the unexpected moments, and all the little things you couldn't have planned.

That's what I love most about photographing weddings in Fiji.

I'm not just there to photograph the ceremony or the pretty details. I'm there to notice the way the day actually felt, the people, the connection, the in-between moments, and all the little pieces that make your wedding yours.

If you're planning a destination wedding in Fiji and looking for a photographer who takes a relaxed, documentary approach with a touch of editorial direction, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up.
